Using thoracic ultrasonography to guide pleurodesis leads to shorter hospital stays, with similar success rates, compared with standard care in people with malignant pleural effusion, SIMPLE study findings indicate.

Xavier Pivot, from the Institute of Cancer Strasbourg in France, and team note that “[t]he results regarding [breast] pCR, overall response, and response based on mammography, ultrasonography, or clinical tumor evaluations supported the comparable efficacy between HD201 and referent trastuzumab.”

The CADMUS investigators report a “slightly lower” rate of detection of clinically significant prostate cancers with multiparametric ultrasound than multiparametric MRI, but a higher rate of referrals for biopsy.

Additional ultrasonography was requested for 21 women, and 17 had had the procedure at the time of analysis, with findings ranging from mildly prominent nodes with a preserved fatty hilum to rounded nodes with apparent loss of a fatty hilum.

In multivariable analyses, factors found to increase a patient’s likelihood of having surgery delayed beyond 12 weeks included being African American, having a high area deprivation index score, attending a hospital with a low case load, more distant year of diagnosis, and undergoing a preoperative mediastinoscopy or endobronchial ultrasonography.

Once again MRI identified more clinically significant cancers than ultrasonography and PSA testing (14 vs nine and seven, respectively).

They suggest: “Women who present with breast cancer symptoms at the time of negative screening mammogram results should either be recalled more frequently, have a shorter screening period, or undergo another imaging modality, such as ultrasonography or magnetic resonance imaging.”

Prebiopsy multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging plus targeted biopsy is associated with increased detection of clinically significant prostate cancer versus ultrasonography-guided systematic biopsy alone, study data show.

Veeru Kasivisvanathan explains the background and clinical implications of the PRECISION trial, which tested whether using multiparametric MRI with a targeted biopsy was noninferior to standard transrectal ultrasonography–guided biopsy in the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer.

In men at clinical risk for prostate cancer, a strategy involving multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging risk assessment followed by targeted biopsy is noninferior, and may even be superior, to standard transrectal ultrasonography-guided biopsy, say the PRECISION researchers.

No cancers were detected by ultrasonography alone.

However, in this study, data regarding clinical presentation, thyroid autoantibody and thyroid ultrasonography were not reported [36].
