medwireNews : New patient guidelines from the US National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) aim to help cancer patients and their caregivers identify the side effects of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment.

The systemic treatments were dosed as per local guidelines, while TTFields therapy at a frequency of 150 kHz was delivered continuously via the NovoTTF device system (Novocure, Root, Switzerland) to the thoracic region with the recommendation to achieve an average usage of at least 75% of each day (18 h/day), explain Leal et al.

Both sets of guidelines are available in the Journal of Clinical Oncology .

As reported in the Annals of Oncology , the guidelines detail which patients with unresectable or metastatic solid tumors should undergo or be considered for MSI/dMMR testing or for NTRK fusion testing, as well as the optimal laboratory tests, specimens, and timing of these investigations.

The updated guidelines document is published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology .

Thomas Flaig discusses the NCCN patient-oriented guidelines for bladder cancer, with a view to explaining the need for the guidance and what patients can hope to get from it.

“Disagreements [across guidelines] were generally related to the areas with lacking evidence,” the team writes.

Many treatment guidelines by the US National Comprehensive Cancer Network include additional recommendations beyond those indicated in the US FDA approvals, and these “often” rely on low levels of evidence, say researchers.

“These revised guidelines might explain the numerically lower rates of grade 5 interstitial lung disease or pneumonitis events observed in DESTINY-Breast02 compared with DESTINY-Breast01,” they continue.
