medwireNews: The European Association of Urology (EAU) has released updated evidence-based guidelines for the management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC).

“These guidelines contain information on the management of individual patients according to a current standardised approach,” write the authors in European Urology.

They point out, however, that “[u]rologists should take into account the specific clinical characteristics of each patient when determining the optimal treatment regimen, based on the proposed risk stratification of these tumours.”

The topics covered include staging and classification systems, diagnosis and risk stratification, prognostic factors, and follow-up. The guidelines also outline best practice conservative and radical approaches for the management of localized and metastatic disease.

But the authors – led by Morgan Rouprêt (Sorbonne University, Paris, France) – caution that “[o]wing to the rarity of UTUC, there are insufficient data to provide strong recommendations.
