medwireNews: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has contacted 14 US-based companies regarding the sale of 65 illegal products that fraudulently claim to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure cancer.
In all, 14 warning letters and four online advisory letters have been issued with regard to violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The products have all been marketed and sold without FDA approval and unless the companies respond and correct the violations, the FDA will take legal action.
“We encourage people to remain vigilant whether online or in a store, and avoid purchasing products marketed to treat cancer without any proof they will work”, said Douglas Stearn, from the FDA Office of Regulatory Affairs.
“Patients should consult a health care professional about proper prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”
Healthcare professions are asked to report adverse events associated with these or similar products to the MedWatch program.
