Abstract
Important factors that contributed to surgery taking the premier place in the treatment of breast cancer in the latter half of the nineteenth century were the introduction of surgical anaesthesia in 1846, the triumph of the solidistic concept with regard to carcinogenesis, the adoption of antiseptic principles in 1864 (Fig. 32) and the steadily increasing refinement of surgical technique.
